Abstract:
The commutator operation applied to normal subgroups of a group is commutative. The commutator operation applied to congruences of a semigroup is not always commutative. The essential difference between these two examples is that the variety of groups has a ``Kiss term'' (named after Emil Kiss), while the variety of semigroups does not.
In my talk, I will discuss the problem of recognizing whether a variety has a commutative commutator (and I will also consider the analogous problem for nine other commutator properties).
