The algebraic Montgomery-Yang problem is a conjecture of Kollár stating that every rational homology projective plane with quotient singularities has at most three singular points if its smooth locus is simply-connected. In this talk, I will present a proof of this conjecture based on a refined use of Donaldson’s diagonalization theorem together with the gluing of spinc structures. This is joint work with Jongil Park and Kyungbae Park. In addition, I will discuss some related "at most three" conjectures and theorems in low-dimensional topology and algebraic geometry.
