Set theory, logic, and topology

The Department of Set Theory, Logic, and Topology was formed by merging the former Departments of Set Theory and Algebraic Logic.

Set theory has long been a central area of Hungarian mathematics. Pioneering work by Paul Erdős and András Hajnal established infinite combinatorics as a vibrant field, and their legacy continues to shape our research. 

Closely connected to this tradition is the internationally recognized school of set-theoretical topology, founded in Budapest in the 1960s by András Hajnal and István Juhász. In recent decades, largely influenced by scholars trained under Miklós Laczkovich, the department’s scope has expanded to include descriptive set theory. In particular, we investigate the theory of universally Baire sets, a central concept in modern set theory.

In the field of logic, building on the work of Hajnal Andréka and István Németi, we apply modern tools of mathematical logic to provide axiomatic foundations and deeper insights into relativity theories, both special and general.
